Just because You are my God

Oh, my God!
I want to love You
Not that I might gain eternal heaven
Nor escape eternal hell
But, Lord, to love You just because
You are my God.

Grant me to give to You
And not to count the cost,
To fight for You
And not to mind the wounds,
To labour and to ask for no reward except the knowledge
that I serve my God.

- Attributed to Saint Igantius Loyola, may God be pleased with him

Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556), was the founder of the Society of Jesus. He began his life as a solider, a long and very painful convalescence from a wound led to a spiritual transformation in which he turned his martial spirit and capacity to suffering to the service of God.

To lose all else to loving God is the ultimate vanishing and the deep and profound Silence in which we disappear....entering into the sweet and wonderful invisibility of the Beloved....the only true existence in this or any other world......

Whoever directs you to this world has cheated you; whoever directs you to deeds has exhausted you; but whoever directs you to Allah has truly counseled you. - Shaykh Abu Hasan Shadhili, may Allah be pleased with him
