they must come, one and all

 1.
Once I met two ascetics of a certain religious sect in a village of Bengal.  "Can you tell me," I asked them, "wherein lies the special features of your religion?"  One of them hesitated for a moment and answered, "It is difficult to define that."  The other said, "No, it is quite simple.  We hold that we have first of all to know our own soul under the guidance of our spiritual teacher, and when we have done that we can find him, who is the Supreme Soul, within us."

"Why don't you preach your doctrine to all the people of the world?" I asked.

"Whoever feels thirsty will of himself come to the river," was his reply.

"But then, do you find it so?  Are they coming?"  The man gave a gentle smile, and with an assurance which had not the least tinge of impatience or anxiety, he said, "They must come, one and all."

Yes, he is right, this simple ascetic of rural Bengal.  Man is indeed abroad to satisfy needs which are more to him than food and clothing.  He is out to find himself.  Man's history is the history of his journey to the unknown in quest of the realisation of his immortal self--his soul.  Through the rise and fall of empires; through the building up gigantic piles of wealth and the ruthless scattering of them upon the dust; through the creation of vast bodies of symbols that give shape to his dreams and aspirations, and the casting of them away like the playthings of an outworn infancy; through his forging of magic keys with which to unlock the mysteries of creation, and through his throwing away of this labour of ages to go back to his workshop and work up afresh some new form; yes, through it all man is marching from epoch to epoch towards the fullest realisation of his soul,- the soul which is greater than the things man accumulates, the deeds he accomplishes, the theories he builds; the soul whose onward course is never checked by death or dissolution.  Man's mistakes and failures have by no means been trifling or small, they have strewn his path with colossal ruins; his sufferings have been immense, like birth-pangs for a giant child; they are the prelude of a fulfillment whose scope is infinite.  Man has gone through and is still undergoing martyrdoms in various ways, and his institutions are the altars he has built whereto he brings his daily sacrifices, marvellous in kind and stupendous in quantity.

All this would be absolutely unmeaning and unbearable if all along he did not feel that deepest joy of the soul within him, which tries its divine strength by suffering and proves its exhaustless riches by renunciation.  Yes, they are coming, the pilgrims, one and all--coming to their true inheritance of the world; they are ever broadening their consciousness, ever seeking a higher and higher unity, ever approaching nearer to the one central Truth which is all-comprehensive.

Man's poverty is abysmal, his wants are endless till he becomes truly conscious of his soul.  Till then, the world to him is in a state of continual flux-- a phantasm that is and is not.  For a man who has realised his soul there is a determinate centre of the universe around which all else can find its proper place, and from thence only can he draw and enjoy the blessedness of a harmonious life.

Mankind entering the Divine Way in Multitude

Iza jaa nasru Allahi wa al Fath.
Wa raayta an nasa yadkhuloona fee deeni Allahi afwaja.
Fasabbih bihamdi Rabbika, wa istaghfirhu;
innaHu kana Tawwaba.

When Divine Support and the Opening cometh,
And thou seest mankind entering the Divine Way in multitude,
Then hymn the praises of thy Lord, and seek forgiveness.
Lo! He is ever receptive 'to Return' (tawba) (to Him).

- Surah of Divine Support, the Quran

Blessings to all who come here seeking the One within them, who seeks their heart!
This is such a beautiful entry, and
I feel the truth of the assurance, with which the ascetic speaks, when he says, "Whoever feels thirsty will of himself come to the river."
Those who hunger and thirst to discover their soul will come!
"They must come, one and all."
Praise the beloved who has made it so!

Beautiful!

Thank you for making a welcoming place for all who seek to discover and celebrate the soul, to sing of the joy, and to be filled with praise!

Very true brother, and so simple that even a naive ascetic from a village can understand. But educated people like us do not, or choose not to understand.

Man 'arafa nafsahu, faqad 'arafa rabbahu - from the tradition of the Prophet (Pbuh) i.e. He who has recognised himself has recognised his Lord!

And the path of spirituality is such that it can be learnt, but cannot be taught. And in order to learn,it must be voluntary, thus their simple smile and faith that those who are hungry and thirsty will come to the fount.

Thank you brother for this post.

Thank you, Sadiq,

For bringing back this post reminding us once again the divine wisdom of Bengali people.

"Whoever feels thirsty will of himself come to the river,"
Yes, our soul also has its needs of food and drink, the same way our body needs food and drink. But why do we neglect our soul and leave it often hungry and thirsty?
We are like fish surrounded by deep and refreshing waters, but we still do not know how to quench our thirst, how to drink from the eternal source of our Beloved.
Unless we find who we really are, our innermost center of being, our soul, we will follow outside illusions and mirages, caught in our desires for the material creation and forgetting all about the Creator and His Magnificence.

MAKE COMMITMENT AND DIG DEEP!

“We are like fish surrounded by deep and refreshing waters, but we still do not know how to quench our thirst, how to drink from the eternal source of our Beloved”.

You and others don’t quench thirst because you are afraid of the ‘C’ word: COMMITMENT.

Make commitment and dig deep! You and others are swimming in shallow waters. In order to quench your thirst and get to the refreshing waters, you have to make commitment and dig deep. We are back to the three C’s (Commitment, Communication, and Contentment).

Dear AV,

Why stick on one letter only, why on C only, if we have the whole alphabet of existence God created for us?
When you remain one sided and narrow thinking you are like a thirsty fish, which refuses to even notice the waters of the existence all around you.
And to be one sided means to be enclosed in your imaginary endless "jihads" of your own ego against the variety and the tremendous beauty of the whole world and the infinite existence. How long can the partial ego lead "jihad" to the Infinity of existence?

STICK TO ONE! WHY NOT?

Have you ever heard of Bulleh Shah? What did
he say about Alif? Is Alif One letter or many letters?

Listen to Bulleh Shah:
“Oh! friend now quit thy learning,
One Alif is all thou dost need.
By learning thou hast loaded my mind,
With books thou hast filled up thy room.
But the true knowledge was lost by pursuing
the false, So quit now, O friend, the pursuit of
thy learning”.

Fools get happy with many. AV is happy with the One.
Why few get chosen? Many do not get chosen because
they lack commitment! The ones who get chosen have
made commitment like AV.

What did Omar Khayyam say about Alif?

Listen to Omar Khayyam:
“My soul said, 'I desire the mystic knowledge:
Teach me if it be in thy power.'

I said, 'Alif.'

She answered, 'Say no more; If one is at home,
a single letter is enough.'”.

AV says, “Make Commitment with the sincere heart”. That will be
the determining factor in your search.

What does the dot under ba contain? I asked the Dot
what I have to do so secrets be revealed to me? The Dot replied,
“Make commitment with sincere heart”.

Have you heard of one night that is better than thousand months?

AV says, “I don’t want thousand months, but just give me that one night!”

For some more is less, for me less is more!

Don’t follow many blogs, but follow one blog like www.mysticsaint.info.
It is enough to give you knowledge of thousand blogs!

The aspects of things that are most important for us are hidden because
of their simplicity and familiarity. –Ludwig Wittgenstein

One insight with conviction is worth a thousand books!

Dear AV,

The fact that you bring in here many quotations from enlightened and understanding people does not make you understanding yourself.
For people like you, full of borrowed from others, from books and scriptures but unrealized and misunderstood knowledge, Bulleh Shah has advised:
“Oh! friend now quit thy learning,
One Alif is all thou dost need.
By learning thou hast loaded thy mind"
Bulleh Shah knew very well the difference between the really knowing heart and the false pretender: for the knowing heart One Alif is all, the One and the All; for the false pretender one "C" is only the prison for his ego to separate from all the others, cutting the world into his own imaginary antagonistic parts (Easterners v's Westerners; destroyers v's destroyed;Americans v's Others, and so on and so forth...)
You say:
"“Make commitment with sincere heart”, but do you yourself make this commitment? A sincere heart will never think of destroying other alive people with mass destruction weapons neither will a sincere heart start jihads against existence nor will a sincere heart cut existence into antagonistic pieces. A sincere heart is whole and holy, as this Existence is.
"If one is at home,
a single letter is enough.'”. And are you at home, AV? To be at home means to see the One in everything and everybody, not to start ego trips and wars of destruction and differentiation against everything and everybody. Even if you cunningly call these ego wars of yours jihads that does not make you righteous and true muslim. Because the only true jihad is the jihad against your own ego and self illusion of being separate and above Existence, above the One and the All.

I AM HOME!

There is nothing wrong with jihad in self-defense. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using weapons of mass destruction in self-defense. If Muhammad did not engage in lesser there jihad, there would be no Islam as we know it today. Thank you, Allah for showing us “The Straight Path” through Muhammad. I am on “The Straight Path”. I am home. I am
at home because I made commitment to “The Straight Path”.

President Theodore Roosevelt said,“Speak softly and carry a big stick”. Meaning: A proverb advising the tactic of caution and non-aggression, backed up by the ability to do violence if required”.

You need to commit yourself to the lesser jihad and greater jihad.
You can not have one without the other. There is inner and the outer.

The weak and the undisciplined always shy away from commitment.

“To be at home means to see the One in everything and everybody”
This is mere talk of yours to please self and others. Talk is cheap. Walk the talk. Make commitment and dig deep.

I home, but you are still long way from home.

And why do you need a self defense, AV?
Is there anybody else except you who is threatening the others with mass destruction weapons? Or anybody else except you who is calling others with ugly names and abusing them?
You claim "I AM HOME". But then why are not you feeling it, why cannot you relax yourself and feel the mercy of God showering upon everyone and the all, including yourself?
Why then your home is so small and with no room for the other God's creatures, which you prefer to destroy but not let them in?
Has ever God let anybody outside his mercy and his home?
Then it seems to me your home is not God's home, your home is your ego imprisonment for yourself.

Sharing is all I am doing! What is wrong
with sharing?

What do you think I am doing with my posts?
I am sharing, educating, informing, teaching,
making people think, raising awareness,
letting people make their own decisions after
my warning, etc.

My mission in life is to make people think and raise
their consciousness to HIGHER CONCIOUSNESS!

What is your mission in life? You always
in the attack mode against mind, ego, etc. I believe
everything in life can be used for good or ill. You
condemn. I ask how I can use mind, ego, reasoning, etc.
to advance on the path.

Dear AV,

There is nothing wrong in sharing provided you openly share your being and own experiencing.
There is everything wrong in spitting all around your aggressiveness, violence, hatred, condemnation of the different.
And as you say "your mission is to educate and teach people how to raise towards higher consciousness", then you must know that higher consciousness first step is acceptance. Acceptance of diversity and multitude of Existence, because this variety of existence is just the multifaceted face of the One, the Beloved.
And when I say existence, I mean the existential, not the false - the mind projections, beliefs, conditioning, illusions.
And as you claim to be a teacher and educator of others, probably it is good for you to know that only God is the teacher. He may or may not choose to teach through you, but he will be always the teacher, not you. That means for you to start teaching others, you have to disappear and only God to remain.

You can interpret my posts any you wish. I am not here to polish your ego. People with great minds are always misunderstood, condemned, opposed, and persecuted.
I am in a good company.

This is what you wrote: “A true master is bound to be misunderstood by ordinary people's mind. Even more than simply misunderstood - a true master will be condemned by those of vested interests and by those afraid of the vested interests”.

I don’t mind if you misunderstand me, condemn me, oppose me, etc. What can I expect from
“ordinary people’s mind”?

Dear AV,

A true master is not with "a great mind" (as you pretend yourself to be), but with a great heart, so great heart as to encompass the whole world.
A mind can only think of itself being great, greater than the others, than existence, but that is the way for the mind to go berserk.

Anonymous said...

No heart and no mind!

You love to change the subject when it suites you. We are not talking about heart and mind. We are talking about your criteria for a master. As you stated, “A true master is bound to be misunderstood by ordinary people's mind. Even more than simply misunderstood - a true master will be condemned by those of vested interests and by those afraid of the vested interests”. There is more to an authentic master than being misunderstood because even a dog can be misunderstood. I prefer my neighbor’s dog to some of these so called “misunderstood masters”. According to your criteria, Jim Jones, would have been the perfect master because he was misunderstood. If you had followed him, you would not be here today! You need to raise your understands for the master and be careful as to choosing a master simply on the basis of “being misunderstood”.
