initiation isn't about suffering, but stepping up | sharing of mystical dream

1.
Mystical dreams play a special role in Sufism. The function of these dreams is to illuminate the world of the imagination, an autonomous sphere of symbols and representations that is viewed as real, but as existing beyond the tangible, material universe. In Sufism, the world of the imagination is thought to exist in a state of suspension apart from physical reality. This dominion is much like an image reflected in a mirror which can be viewed three-dimensionally, although the image itself is not a three-dimensional object.

In their prayers, Sufi mystics often request to be given a dream-world spiritual chaperon to help lead them into the "way of the return." Sometimes these spirit-world aides are given somewhat arcane names like "Perfect Nature" and "Invisible Guide."

Active imagination is a term used by classical Sufis who represented a metaphysics of pure monotheism (tawhid) in which God alone is real, while the "I" that separates itself from this unified Reality is unreal.

The mundus imaginalis, or alami mithal, is a level of reality in which "meanings" are embodied as images that have a kind of autonomous existence. The imaginal world is an "interworld" in which visions, which are simultaneously meanings, are experienced by a psychospiritual faculty, the active imagination, or what Sufis would simply call the "heart." it is important to realize that this level of perception was reliably available only to those souls that were to some extent "purified". In its mature functioning it was certainly not a conceptual, intellectual, or merely symbolic experience, but a visionary one of the kind that many Western psychospiritual explorers touch only rarely in their lives, but which is the natural medium of mature mystics. It is not uncommon for a Sufi to ask another, "Did it happen in the tangible world or in meaning (mana)?" Whether the experience of the active imagination is in a dream or in wakefulness, it has the quality of profound significance.

2.
I dream a lot and try to record my dreams in a journal.  This is a dream that has lingered in my mind for about a year now. Though it feels as if it is self explanatory it still lingers pretty clearly in my thoughts.

“There was water everywhere.  It was a flood. I could see water rushing around on all sides of an old dark clapboard house-like shack.  I was with a group of people. I am not sure if they were people I knew or not.  We all ran inside.

We stood in a large room and there were circles on the dark brown wood floor.  It was as if the circles were cut into the floor. A man stood in one of the circles. I began to become nervous as I realized this was an initiation and I was supposed to stand on one of the circles.

Everyone was silent and watching me. I didn’t want to participate. Then I thought “why not.” So I went and took my place in the circle I knew was mine which was behind the man and to his left. I wanted to connect to him to at least know I wasn’t alone. He did not look at me.

I thought I should say something but he was silent and staring straight ahead so I said nothing.  I watched as the circle he stood in began to sink into the ground beneath the floor.  As he disappeared from site I thought I should be nervous and I wondered what it would be like to sink into the ground and I wondered if I was going to die - and I thought to die to what or where.

Then a thought flashed into my mind “I have done this before - many times before. I can do this.”  I felt peaceful as the circle I stood on began to sink down.  I sunk beneath the floor and into the ground. I could smell and see the dark earth. Then I glanced slightly upward and was surprised that the ground was not closing over me instead the circle I stood on began to rise.

As I came to the surface I had this sense of knowing deep inside. I suddenly understood and knew what it was all about… The thought that came into my mine was that the initiation wasn’t about suffering but about stepping up, taking the risk, and just being willing to do whatever it was that I was asked to do.

Then I woke up and quickly wrote it down.

We did not reveal the Sacred Recital (al Qur'an) to you, to cause you any hardship.
Only to remind the reverent. A revelation from the Creator of the planetary and the heavenly existence.

Hi ,Do You Know ..? Meditation is not contemplation. Meditation is not concentration. Meditation is a state of being. It is a state of awareness. Meditation is not about doing something; rather it is about doing nothing. So Check out more Intresting techniques and Guidene about Maditation only at [Gurumaa.com]

Dear Prashant Soul - One,

The web page recommended by you says:
"Meditation is not contemplation. Meditation is not concentration. Meditation is a state of being. It is a state of awareness. Meditation is not about doing something; rather it is about doing nothing."
This definition of meditation has been given by Osho in his talks.
I would appreciate if you mention it on your web page. Thanks.

Dear Sadiq Bhai,

The more I think about your series on dreams the more I like it.

Those who understand themselves and interpret their dreams correctly are truly awakened. They know their Lord. Many times I have slept on things at night,
and gotten up in the morning with new insights. One insight with conviction is worth more than reading a thousand books on the subject. My apology to Nietzsche
since he said, “Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.” He never experienced convictions like mine.

Thank you for the inspiring series on dreams. Those who are ready will benefit from it, but those who are not will have to wait until they have some convictions.

Dear Sadiq,

A very interesting post you have published and in the subtle field of our mind versus consciousness correlation.
However, there should be no confusion between the state of dreaming and the state of divine wisdom (maana).
In the state of dreaming, imaginations and visualizations one is still in the mind as much as in the state of convictions and concepts. So Nietzshe is right when he says: "Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.” (Thank you, AV, for bringing Nietzshe in).
I would add: - Dreams and visualizations are not part of truth either but part of lies. Dreams and visualizations are part of our unconscious mind, which speaks to us through images. Our unconscious mind is enormous, 9 times bigger than our conscious mind and very influential. The unconscious mind is individual, collective and cosmic and is all our past experiences for endless past lives of existence.
A Buddha, an enlightened being or mystic, is the being who has transformed his unconscious mind into consciousness. For such a person the divine reality of God is the ultimate and the only real reality, which is of no form, immages, dreams or visualizations, but only of maana, meaning or in other words, of truth. Because God is Truth, Al - Haq.
An enlightened being like Prophet Mohammad,Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Osho, Lao Tsu and many other known and unknown precious beings, is the being who has gone beyond the mind of past conditionning and unconsciousness into the superconsciousness of divine understanding. Such a man Nietzshe called "the superman", Al Hillaj called the truth (AlHaq). Both Nietzshe and Al Hillaj remained utterly misunderstood and condemned by ordinary and mediocre people.
Nowadays science and especially quantum physics start shedding some light on the way people's perceptions determine very much the physical appearance and the form of the perceived.
There is an interesting film in my view worth seeing and pondering upon - "What the beep down the rabbit whole")

The Whole Human Civilization Is A Lie!

If dreams, visions, inspirations, and visualizations are part of lies, then the whole human civilization is a lie. Civilization built on lies can not stand for long. How long will a mansion last if its foundation is built on sand? If dreams, visions, inspirations, and visualizations were lies, then the human civilization has the foundation of “spider’s house” because “….truly the flimsiest of houses is the spider’s house;-if they but knew.” (Quran, 29:41).

The world would have been different if Abraham and Muhammad ignored their dreams, or Joseph was unable to interpret dreams for the King.

Those of pure and sound hearts have dreams that are like the dreams of Abraham, Joseph, and Muhammad. What kind of heart did Abraham bring to his Lord? If you are not dreaming beautiful dreams, look into you heart. The Prophet will say polish your heart so you can have true and beautiful dreams.

“Dreamers are the saviors of the world. Humanity can not forget its dreamers; it cannot let their ideals fade and die; it lives in them; it knows them as the realities which it shall one day see and know. Composer, sculptor, painter, poet, prophet, sage, these are the makers of the afterworld, the architects of heaven. The world is beautiful because they have lived; without them, laboring humanity would perish”. (1)

“He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty ideal in his heart, will one day realize it”. (1)

“Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one day be; your Ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last unveil”. (1)

Polish your heart so your dreams, visions, inspirations, and visualizations will become like the dreams of Abraham, Joseph, and Muhammad! To belittle dreams is to belittle humanity. Humanity will perish without dreams. To deny dreams is to deny our own existence. You and I were once a dream in our parents sleep! Would you say we are lies? Are our parents telling us lies?

“He who cherishes a beautiful vision, a lofty idea in heart, will one day realize it. Columbus cherished a vision of another world, and he discovered it; Copernicus fostered the vision of a multiplicity of worlds and a wider universe, and he revealed it; Buddha beheld the vision of a spiritual world of stainless beauty and perfect peace, and he entered into it”. (1)

“The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart-this you will build your life by, this you will become”. (1). The qualities of your dreams are directly related to the quality of your heart. Those of pure and sound hearts have dreams that are like the dreams of Abraham, Joseph, and Muhammad.

I have a dream….!

Yes, we, ordinary human beings are living in our dreams, projections and imaginations, all products of our identification with the mind. Therefore, our life is dreamlike.
That is the reason for God to send His Messengers, the awakened beings, to awake us up, to call us back home, to God ultimate reality of consciousness and utter awareness.
If Prophet Mohammad had kept dreaming as all the people around him he would have not been able to see God's reality and to convey the message of the Truth of God to us.
I understand that for some people it is much easier and convenient to keep sleeping and dreaming, endlessly projecting themselves in boosted egos and pompous declarations of some mysterious God out there, in some imagined distant world, difficult to reach by us, ordinary people. Then they are no more to be kept responsible for their irresponsible blind behavior and postponement of God encountering.
Much courage is needed to be awaken, alert and truthful to God's reality. That is why human beings like Rumi, Al Hillaj, Kabir, Prophet Mohammad, Buddha, Jesus, Mahavir, Osho are so rare on Earth.

People who don’t dreams are dead! No dreams, No life!

Everything was once a dream. People who don’t dream are dead! There is no sense in talking to dead people.

Dreams give life to people. You are not living if you don’t have dreams. Your dreams can make you an ordinary or an extra-ordinary. Take inventory of your dreams.

There is nothing wrong in dreaming, visualizing, imagining, dear AV,as long as you realize those are dreams only, imaginations, only, not the real life, not the life God gifted you with. Because dreaming, projecting, imagining, is not your true being, how could it be? Only Now and Here is your being, your alive presence, and dreams and imaginations take you away from your inner center of being, away from your inner shrine whereas God is waiting for you.

My dreams don’t take me away from the Presence, but it enables me to live in the Presence. It all depends on your heart. I am in the Presence, the Presence is in me, and the Presence is all around me. This is so because of my heart. I give thanks that this is so!

Presence which seems present in a dream is not a real presence. It remains a dream.
If this is the Presence of God, you speak about, AV, the Presence of God is always Here and always Now. The only thing we need is to see It, and for this all we need is open eyes in full awakening.

Dear Sadiq Bhai,

This is relevant question to the current post. If one is reading/discussing Surah Al Fath (48) and Surah Al Rahman (55) in a dream, what would be the significance of such a dream? I would appreciate your insight.

Thank you so much for sharing with your readers about dreams and I read the latest post this morning. Then I read some of the comments and although I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion I just can’t help myself and have to write to you about this. I personally find it very ironical that some of the readers are having these discussions about what is meditation and what is contemplation, and the difference between them. And then one is quoting one source and another is knit-picking and “making clarifications” on the first definition. And to me it sometimes seems that these are just wars on words, constant defining and –re-defining, words for the words sake sometimes. The irony is that this post is about sub-conscious and the sub=consciousness as in dreams, and surely when the sub-consciousness is at work we neither meditate nor contemplate! Our ego is asleep although temporarily and we are letting things appear that we. As the manifestation of the collective sub-consciousness, can and have been suppressing, including our ego. Which is why mystics have always been interested in dreams and the interpretation of dreams. It is a bit like the suspended heart beat and the slow breathing of the crocodiles when they are hibernating, and when their body temperature drops: suspended halfway.

So to be perfectly honest I don’t understand why some of these comments are there, are some people writing just to show off, and to satisfy some sort of pride, or to tell the rest of the world that they have read this latest post, I don’t really know. Is the bird meditating or contemplating when it is singing, and is making a beautiful sound? Or is the grass meditating or contemplating or is the beautiful flower or is the river when it is running down the valley? Isnt it exactly because of these too many words and too many attempts to define something that defies any definitions that we have got ourselves in such a mess with different theories and definitions of the Spirit? I wonder…

Anyway, this is what I thought when I read the post and was quite inspired to write a little comment, for the heart knows best if one is a Sufi in the real sense of this word.

Take care and have a good day of prayer today

The verses below reportedly were written on the wall of Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta, India, and are widely attributed to her.

Some sources say that the words below were written on the wall in Mother Teresa's own room. In any case, their association with Mother Teresa and the Missionaries of Charity has made them popular worldwide, expressing as they do, the spirit in which they lived their lives.

They seem to be based on a composition originally by Kent Keith, but much of the second half has been re-written in a more spiritual way. Both versions are shown below.
___________________________________________
1. The version found written on the wall in Mother Teresa's home for children in Calcutta:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.

-this version is credited to Mother Teresa

2. The Original Version:
The Paradoxical Commandments
by Dr. Kent M. Keith
1. People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

2. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

3. If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

10. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.
