With the current new moon we have entered into a new lunar month. In Islamic calendar this is a specially blessed month called Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Hijri calendar. This month includes the birthday of the holy Prophet Muhammad, upon him be Divine grace.According to sunni scholars the Prophet's birthday is observed on 12th Rabi al-awwal (falls on 20th March this year 2008) and 17th Rabi al-awwal (march 25 this year) according to shia scholars.
This is also the month of Prophet's emigration to Medina (then known as city of Yathrib) where he established the first community of the believers. Tala'al Badru Alayna is the song that the children of Medina sang to welcome the beloved Prophet:
Tala'al-Badru 'alayna,
min thaniyyatil-Wada'
wajaba al-shukru 'alayna,
ma da'a lillahi da'
O the White Moon rose over us
From the Valley of Wada'
And we owe it to show gratefulness
Where the call is to Allah
Ayyuha al-mab'uthu fina
ji'ta bi-al-amri al-muta'
Ji'ta sharrafta al-Madinah
marhaban ya khayra da'
O you who were raised amongst us
coming with a work to be obeyed
You have brought to this city nobleness
Welcome! best call to God's way.

# Sending greetings of peace and blessings to Prophet's noble soul
"Undoubtedly, God and Angels send blessings on the Prophet. O you who believe! Send upon him blessings and salute him fully well in abundance" (The Quran, al-Ahzab, Verse 56).
"Invoke blessings upon me abundantly on Friday because it is a day that is specially witnessed and the Angels witness it abundantly. As soon as a person invokes blessings on me his invocation is shown to me until he ends it." Companion Abu al-Darda' (r) asked: "Even after (your) death?" The Prophet (s) replied: "Yes even after my departure from earthly plane too. Verily, God has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets."
The Holy Prophet says, "Definitely there are many Angels of God that sojourn the earth and bring the Salaam of my community and lovers to me".
May God's profound peace and blessings be upon the praised one, Prophet Muhammad. As saalamu aalikum wa rahmatullah wa baraktuhu ya Rasul'Allah, ya Habib Allah.

I never had gotten a convincing explanation as to why we have to send blessings on the Prophet. Can you shed some light on this? Why should we bless him? I want explanation other than that God commanded it and the Prophet instructed his followers to bless him.
Thanks,
Tahir

Sadiq,
The other reasons that I do not find convincing either are that
angels witness it, and it benefits the believers. I just hope
you would not duck the question.
Thanks,
Tahir

Dear Munir,
Saalam and thanks so much for your site's info. best wishes to you.
Dear Tahir,
Saalam.
The aspect why we send blessing to Prophet Muhammad can be explained by both exoteric and esoteric perspective.
1.
from the exoteric perspective, it was a practice given for the very practical reason of creating love, respect, compassion and loyalty for the Messenger of God. and any practice can best be justified by the result it brings.
anyone who has studied the life of the companions of the Prophet and has the historical knowledge will know that the loyalty, the love and unbound honor the companion had for the Prophet was unparalleled to any historical figure. even no other Biblical Prophet of God enjoyed such high honor by his companions during their very lifetime.
the practice of invoking blessing everytime someone pronounced his name had a profound psychological effect also. his success, his teachings to change the lives, to change the personalities of his companions and changing the society as a whole had any chance to happen only when people around him had profound respect for the person and his message.
understand that religious practices and rituals are there to alighn our psyche and consciousness to something higher. the very practice of sending greetings of peace and blessings had a great psychological effect on the companions. and from general perspective it acts as a reminder of honor and respect to a personality who embodied many facets of what it means to be human and what it means to perform.
2.
in order to get appreciate the esoteric perspective of sending blessing to Prophet, it is the Nur Muhammad, the Light of Muhammad, the primorda light which points to that reality. i have little knowledge and hence no permission to talk about this. but to say the least, sending blessing to Prophet Muhammad is not limited to sending blessing to a historical person alone. in the inner plance directing blessing to a point has huge cosmic consequences. and one has to understand the secret that Nur Muhammad is the light within the each soul.
just as "Remember me and I will remember you" is the secret of reciprocal reflection between human soul's Rembrance and the Divine Soul's Remembrance; such is also the nature of sending blessing to Ahmad.
and here is another esoteric secret, Ahmad is Ahad with a Meem. and Ahad points to Divine Oneness. so its well beyond limited understanding of a person, but much beyond.
3.
Angels are nothing but God's manifestation. pls don't be fooled by mythical limited images about it. when its said, Angels witness it, realize that it is God who witness it through His Jalal which for our understanding is named as Angel. The beauty of angel is His Jamal manifestation, the action is His Jamal.
and Allahu Alim. God knows the best. we know nothing compared to His Infinite Knowledge.
Sadiq,
Thanks for the response to my questions about the blessings.
All the best,
Tahir

we are welcome Tahir.
best to you too,
Sadiq

It is such a great and engaging web portal!
the most should i say famous durood is the durood ibrahim aalims have till date not been able to explain this durood. in this durood according to aalims the translation is that
Send blessings upon (Holy Prophet) Muhammad and upon the followers of (Holy Prophet) Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibraheem and upon the followers of Ibraheem; indeed, You are praiseworthy and glorious. Allahumma! Bless (Holy Prophet) Muhammad and the follower of (Holy Prophet) Muhammad as You blessed Ibraheem and the follower of Ibraheem; indeed, You are praise worthy and glorious
but the question which hurts aalims is that Muhammed was the greatest of creation and my question is which blessing did ibrahim hold that Muhammed never had. you ask for somethign that you dont have and now according to the physical narrow minded aalims we ask oh god give muhammed the heights of blessings you gave ibrahim' hold on a second what blessings did the prophet ibrahim have that prophet muhammed never had. the answer this can not be really explained in fact sufism is something that cannot be explained in words but the aalims explanation on this durood is wrong. as we are not blessings the prophet as who are we to bless the prophet allama iqbal says 'ke wafa muhammed se to ham teray yay jahaan cheez hai kya ham loho kalam bi teray' meaning what justics can we do to you og prophet as we are made from you(hadith that the prophet said that he was made from gods noor and the world from the prophets noor) we are the pen and book of yours. our basic image our true reality is noor e muhamadi which we are made from and the same noor e muhamdi which prophet ibrahim was made from. so in this durood we saying to out self as muhammedi bless us with the heights of blessings that you blessed ibrahim(ibrahim also made from noor e muhamdi so we saying bless us with the original noor guide us to that make us fanafirasool) so whenever reading the durood dont think you are blessing the prophet he is already blessed and what can we do for the prophet we are nothing the prophet is toooooo toooo great our selves can not bless the prophet as we are nothing but we are made from his noor so when reading any durood always remember you are asking dua from god for yourself saying guide us to the original noor make us recognise that noor. a very big sufi explained this to me and noooo physical aalim in the world can explain this as knowledge is not gained from reading books but from gatherings of saints and in the oneness wahdat of allah.
