Wisdom of Buddha

Do not accept what you hear by report,
do not accept tradition,
do not accept a statement because it is found in our books,
nor because it is in accord with your belief,
nor because it is the saying of your teacher.

Be the lamps unto yourselves.

Buddha, about 2560 years ago ...

  1. I once read a charming little story about an ancient Chinese master.

One day, to the shock of all his devout students, the master walked outside and striding over to the large bonfire, started heaping all of his books and notes, including those of his venerated teachers, into the flames.

His students, panicking, pled with him to stop. Turning to them, he said, "They are useless".

It was realized after that time that their teacher had obtained a greatly enhanced inner connection to the eternal.
