The Photo is the ‘Pulitzer Prize’ winning Photo taken in 1994 during the Sudan Famine. The picture depicts a famine stricken children crawling toward an United Nations food camp, located a kilometer away. The vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can eat it. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer - Kevin Carter who left the place afterward.
Three months later he committed suicide due to depression. The suicide note he left behind is a litany of nightmares and dark visions, a clutching attempt at autobiography, self-analysis, explanation, excuse. He wrote, he was "depressed...without phone...money for rent...money for child support...money for debts...money!!!...I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain...of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners... ". Detail story here.
Thanks to Muktomona for the message. I quote here the comment from the editor of Muktomona, Avijit Roy, "Sometimes I feel like Carter that it's better to die in this unequal and unhappy world, rather than living in denial and hypocrisy. Don't you guys sometimes feel the same way as well?"

hmm....i just read this post from mukto-mona.com
ReplyDeleteThnks for adding this post in the blog.
"...living in denial and hypocrisy.'
ReplyDeleteI find this to be a good description of death.
Hi Beloved Arnab !!
ReplyDeleteI found ur name in Muktomona.. is that you or someone else?
If you, congrats for being involved in such a brilliant forum. Its nice to see both side of the coin and being able to realize at the same time, "I know they are part of the same coin".
:) i hope u understand what i mean.
Beloved Mark,
ReplyDeleteYou are the man !!
You are a true saint, do you know that?
Not everyone can realize the hidden truth like that !! Not everyone is blessed with such divine inspirations.
I am just beginning my day, and a statement from u like that really fills me, inspire from inside.
Yes, thats a near perfect description perhaps of Death. Death of heart, death of mind, death of our consciousness.
Sadiq,
ReplyDeleteThis was a very provocative post. Your title really does define it - such unequal and unhappy experiences depicted here in the small child and the aftermath of the photographer.
My heart opens for those in darkness.
Thank you Sadiq.
I do sometimes feel the same way as Avijit Roy, but later on I regret having those thoughts because I know, wishing for death is just another name of running away from this crisis... a crisis that needs the contribution of compassionate hearts. I am sorry, but I cannot stand the people who kill themselves.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did not anyone think-- that photo winning the prize was a bit ironical? The photographer who captured this excruciating reality is being celebrated... the excruciating reality is being appreciated as an art... wow! Weird world we live in.
"My heart opens for those in darkness" !!!! what the heck are you trying to say? that you are in light just becuase your not starving! I hate it when people put themselves above others due to circumstance....so if you are above them, why don't you figure out how to fix it!!!!

Beloved Maximus,
ReplyDeleteI think you took the word 'darkness' too literally. Everything that veils the Divine Light is darkness. Our self ego, denial ... everything is darkness.
On a different tone, poverty is darkness, war among nations are darkness. So pls don't misunderstand Meredith. I'm sure his intention is pure.
Yes, Sadiq, you read me correctly.
ReplyDeleteDarkness to me is that which veils the Divine Light. In the extreme poverty depicted here, in the suffering of the child and the later suffering of the photographer, there feels an absence of light - surely these were their darkest days. There is suffering of these beings I see as a part of all of our selves.
I do not see myself as above others, but a part of others - not separate. When a part of humanity is suffering, we all are suffering. And oh how I wish I could fix it! Holding my heart open to light for all of our shared bodies is one small way of reflecting light into darkness.
In my tradition, when we see or know the suffering of another, we "Hold them in the Light," it is another way of saying that you pray for others, and that you open your heart with love for others.
Yes, Sadiq my intention is pure. Yet, you made me smile ~ I am a 'her' not a 'him'.
Beloved Meredith,
ReplyDeletewhen i wrote him, i got a sneaky feeling that it could be her. sorry, and pardom me for my ignorance.. (i'm not very familiar with western names and gender differenciation).
Yes, u spoke it well.
By the way, if u don't mind asking, may i know which tradition r u from? Your ideas sound interesting.. is it catholic?
Sadiq,
ReplyDeleteMy tradition is Quaker - but I am an unusual Quaker in that I love to reach into the depths of all religions and find the common element. It seems to me that we are all drinking water from wells that are nourished from the same deep source. Religions and traditions often draw lines in the sand, and are like different fingers all pointing to the same moon. I am not so interested in the wells, or the lines or the fingers - what captivates me is the amazing essence - the deepest source that runs through all of our lives. There is a pureness manifested when our hands, eyes, and hearts focus on the Divine that enfolds us as one.
